Here's my bit of kit...

At long last, I’ve purchased a proper motorcycle jacket. No leather & chrome mind you; I don’t ride a cruiser or a classic bike. I ride a “sport” bike, so matching cordura with CE protectors will do just fine. So a perfect opportunity to write about my riding gear then.

Helmet: GPR:

This is my 4th helmet, since I began riding 2-wheeled vehicles nearly 10 years ago. The first 2 ones were some local junk, but since international standard lids began becoming available about 3 years ago, I immediately picked up an MPA-AGV Pacific helmet (a yellow one, with the hopes that I’d buy a yellow motorcycle one day). The AGV served me well for the last 3 years through the thick and thin of daily use. So it was about time I got a new lid, and that I did; A GPR helmet (a yellow one, since I now do own a yellow motorcycle :-D). The GPR does seem to be one of the better ones available in the Indian market. It’s a pretty comfortable & as for safety, I’ve been told people have survived 150kph+ crashes with these on. Hopefully, I should never have to test that claim. My only complaint is that currently in the monsoons, the visor has a tendency to fog often. But this inadequacy can be easily overcome by keeping the visor just slightly cracked open.

Jacket: DSG Spike:
So I finally bought an armored riding jacket crossing hurdles of availability & sizing. It’s a lovely yellow (has to be :-D) cordura street jacket with CE Approved elbow, shoulder & back protectors. Got this from Dream Sporting Gear in Pune and its their own brand called DSG. Although they had a huge selection of jackets from big brands like AStars & AXO, I decided not to buy these coz they were more than twice as expensive and offered the same amount of protection. The best part of this jacket is that its got mesh inserts & a couple of zippered vents on the arms. Coupled with a water-resistant/wind-proof cold weather liner, this jacket is usable virtually all year around. Many people think armored jackets have their use only on the track, till they crash on the streets or see one of their riding buddies crash on the streets, doing street speeds. My take on this is, these jackets are comfortable, rain resistant, wind proof, tremendously resistant to impacts & abrasion, look absolutely smashing and don’t cost all that much. I’d have one of these over some fancy wind-cheater in a heartbeat.

Gloves: Teknic Chicane:
This was the first bit of kit I bought after I had acquired my new (yellow!) motorcycle. I really don’t know why I was desperate for full leather gauntlets, even before I had got any other piece of kit (did have a decent helmet though), but I’m really glad I was. Though these gloves look like racing gloves to the casual observer, they can hardly be called as “Track-ready”. But I guess they’re more than perfect for the kind of speeds out little Indian bikes do. A goat-skin construction provides a very comfortable & flexible fit, and where there is a need for serious abrasion protection, its covered with layers of cow-hide along with a fat steel thread molded knuckle protector. The Teknics are the only piece of my kit which have actually been tested for what they supposed to do. A couple of small spills when I was finding my “fast-motorcycle” legs left the upper surface of the cow-hide palm inserts a little scraped. A far better outcome than having my own hide scraped I guess…

Boots: Icon Field Armor:
These are my favorite bits of my current riding gear kit. After realizing that it would be very easy to seriously damage one’s feet in the event of a motorcycle crash, perhaps never to ride a bike again, or indeed even never walk properly again, I decided that sneakers just wouldn’t cut it & good motorcycle boots were the order of the day. Some intense research later, I found these; the Icon Field Armor boots. Plastic molded armor on the toe, heel and shin, three buckle straps to hold the boot firmly on one’s feet, a zippered side entry for easy on & off and laces behind the shin armor plate for a custom fit. And more importantly, all this without being as flashy as racing boots and at a fraction of their cost. Perfect! OK, so when I actually rode with them on, I wished they wouldn’t go underneath my jeans so that I could show them off, coz they really look like they belong on Robocop’s feet. But safety & coolness apart, they did wonders for my riding posture as well. Plus they have mesh inserts to ensure that your feet don’t get too sweaty. An absolute bargain at Rs. 3800 (US $92)…

This is not the end of my kit by far. Knee & Shin protectors, a full Spine protector, padded underwear, another pair of leather gauntlets and another helmet are in the pipeline.

Though I would urge any biker reading this to buy every bit of good riding gear kit they can afford (Hey… you could afford a bike, couldn’t you. So why not spend a bit on good gear), one should never neglect the importance of passive safety. The most important safety device on a motorcycle is the bit between the rider’s ears. Though I may go on and on about how safe my “Go Faster” clothes are, I’m have no hurry, or even the inclination, to test any of them out. Use your head, don’t push harder than your limits and ride safe. Best bit of safety feature yet...

What to wear and when - Sport Rider Magzine


We've all had it happen, and it's usually quite unpleasant. It's that point during your travels when the realization hits that you are completely unprepared for the intemperate weather Mother Nature is force-feeding you. Whether it's extreme heat, cold or precipitation, most meteorological annoyances tend to send the unprepared, gung-ho motorcycle traveler hightailing it to the nearest shelter-usually in the form of a nice temperature-controlled motel room.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Some riders are unsure of the gear needed for even moderate weather, let alone for the extremes. The questions vary: What gear do I need? How outfitted can I get on a limited budget? Do I have to buy different gear for every season? Thankfully, it doesn't take a truckload of cash to get set up with a decent riding outfit. The fancier you get, the more it costs, but even a basic riding ensemble can be augmented by some very inexpensive methods to help outfox the nasty weather in which most of us find ourselves more often than not.

First, however, you need the basics.


The Basics
Regardless of weather conditions, there are a few items no rider should be without: A helmet, gloves, jacket and boots. Laura Douglas, a paramedic with the Enloe Hospital Flight Care in Northern California, sees the evidence every day. "Of the accidents we go to there are a lot of leg, facial and jaw injuries," says Douglas. "And most of the facial trauma is a result of not wearing a full-face helmet. And of course road rash, which can be very painful. Road rash is basically a skin burn, and when you have a large amount of fluid loss and exposure, you're susceptible to the same infections that a burn victim would be at risk for. The difference we see between riders who wear protective gear and those who don't is drastic." We won't go into the myriad products available on the market, but here are a few points to take into consideration when purchasing gear.

Helmet
Most DOT- or Snell-approved helmets offer good protection, but like the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. That's not to say a $150 helmet won't do its job, but it most likely won't offer the same level of comfort, fit and protection a top-shelf model will.

Look for an adequately vented helmet that fits snugly (remember, it will break in) and is void of any pressure points, especially in the forehead and temple region.


Jacket and Pants
Whether you choose leather or fabric riding apparel really depends on your needs and preferences. Leather is considered unrivaled in abrasion resistance, but is not as versatile as the Cordura and composite fabric materials that many of today's popular riding suits are made of. These suits accommodate clothing underneath and are generally easy to slip on and off. Several suits advertise 100 percent waterproof fabric, a plus if you'd rather not don a rainsuit when the skies open. Look for impact-absorbent padding or armor in the shoulders, elbows and back.

Helmut Kluckner, owner of Helimot European Accessories, gives this advice for buying a jacket. "One important thing is to make sure the sleeves are not too long," says Kluckner. "If the sleeves are the wrong length, the armor will be in the wrong spot and won't be as useful in a crash. The leather will also bunch up near the wrists and be uncomfortable. Also, beware of hard armor directly underneath the first layer of leather. There should be a layer of foam padding between the armor and leather, otherwise the armor can cause the leather covering it to fail."

When it comes to protecting legs, many riders wear jeans on a daily basis. While better than wearing shorts, jeans offer virtually no abrasion resistance. When purchasing a jacket, it's a good idea to find a model that zips to protective pants, complete with padding in the hips, knees and preferably the tailbone.

Gloves
Whatever you do, wear some sort of hand protection. Even if it's a set of gardening gloves, it's better than going without protection all together. Riding gloves are best, and your choice of gloves should reflect their intended use. If you plan on using them for short trips and commuting, gloves can fit more snugly than if you plan to travel at length. Gloves used for long-distance traveling should be a little roomier, but still fairly snug so as not to come off in an accident. Make sure the gloves have long gauntlets and wrist straps, both of which help keep them in place in the event of a crash.

Boots
Boots are often overlooked as a key protective garment. Many riders simply wear rugged hiking or work boots for both local and long-distance travel, and if the boot extends over the top of the ankle, these can afford a reasonable degree of protection. Riding boots are a better choice, as they contain plastic armor and/or soft foam padding in the shin, heel, ankle and toe areas. When boot shopping, look for ample padding in these areas, good traction from the sole and a comfortable fit.

COLD WEATHER
If you're traveling in colder climes, there are already enough variables to worry about without having to fret over whether or not you'll be hypothermic by noon. Tires don't warm up as well, there may be ice on the road-why throw your riding apparel into the mix? By dressing properly in cold weather, you ensure that, regardless of outside conditions, your concentration and focus won't be impaired by your body's inability to deal with the cold.


An electric vest helps warm the vital organs in the torso, which in turn allows sufficient blood flow to your other extremities. A fleece liner or sweater helps retain that heat.

Undergarments:
Adventure clothing companies such as Columbia, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia and REI (to name a few) all offer quality first-layer long underwear that help insulate the body and wick moisture away from the skin.

Electric Vest: An electric vest offers the most bang for the buck when it comes to fighting off the cold. As your body cools, it begins conserving blood flow for your head, heart and other vital organs, and circulation to your extremities is reduced. An electric vest warms your torso, which helps maintain blood flow to your hands and feet (which are usually the first to get icy). There are a number of good electric vests on the market.

Polar Fleece: A good polar fleece vest and pants supplies a valuable extra layer of warmth and insulation. Many motorcycle apparel companies and the aforementioned mountain/active-wear companies manufacture quality fleece clothing.


Full Riding Suit: Jeans don't cut it in cold weather, so a full riding suit is a necessity. Leather is preferred by many, but we like the versatility, comfort and protection of a full one- or two-piece textile suit. They can usually accommodate more layers of clothing underneath, and help insulate your body better than leather.

Gloves: In a pinch, you can wear surgical gloves underneath your riding gloves or put rubber household cleaning gloves over the top to help protect them from wind shear, but the best investment is a quality set of insulated gloves. Most cold weather gloves are bulky to some degree, so make sure they do not interfere with finger dexterity and your ability to work the controls smoothly.


Make sure to close, tape over or plug the vents in your helmet and boots.

Tips and Tricks:
Close 'Em: Remember to close your helmet vents (and even tape some over) during cold weather. Most high-end helmets have systems designed to vent hot air out of the helmet. Tape up all jacket and boot vents also.

Electric Vest Placement: Electric vests are most efficient when placed fairly close to the skin-usually over the second or third layer of clothing. Collars are available on most models, but can sometimes add to bulkiness around the neck area. Fitment should be snug but not tight; make sure the vest does not restrict movement in the riding position, and leave enough room to add a sweatshirt or fleece underneath if desired.

Electrify: You can stack on other electric accessories, such as grips, gloves, seat cushions or chaps, but remember that your alternator may not be able to handle multiple electrical accessories at once. Install a voltmeter to monitor your system and make sure it's not overdrawn.


Use a balaclava or bandana to help insulate your neck and head and keep cold air away from your skin.

Balaclava or Bandana: Use a balaclava (available from most apparel manufacturers and any ski shop) or other cloth or fleece neck wrap for added insulation and to help seal air passages around the neck and head.

Glove Liners: Glove liners made of insulating material such as DuPont Thermostat are available from most outdoor outfitting stores. They are lightweight, fit underneath most properly fitting gloves and add an extra layer of insulating heat around the hands.


Lightweight glove liners are a great way to add extra insulation under standard riding gloves.

Warmers: Perhaps the best cheap tip, warmers offer a one-shot disposable air-activated heat source. They can be found at any outdoor supply shop (even Wal-Mart), cost less than a dollar each and are lightweight enough to be slipped in just about anywhere you'd like. Just don't place them against bare skin, as the heat output can be erratic.

Remember:
Stop the Wind

If your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced, hypothermia will eventually set in. And not just in extreme temperatures. Hypothermia can occur above 40¯ F if a person becomes chilled from rain or sweat. At that point, your brain and body will be affected with symptoms that include shivering, exhaustion, slurred speech and slowed reaction times-none of which mix well with riding a motorcycle. The key to staying warm in cold conditions is to keep the wind from touching your skin and to keep your core body temperature up-which means protecting the head and torso. Cover all exposed skin and don't hesitate to put on a rainsuit even in cold, dry conditions, as it will help stop the wind. Layer your clothing, which effectively adds more air-and thus insulation -between you and the elements.

HOT WEATHER
We're all more tempted to ride unprotected when the mercury hits the triple digits, especially for short hops around town, when donning a smothering helmet, boots, gloves and jacket takes nearly as long as the trip itself. But whether you're making a quick local trip or heading out for your summer sport tour, dressing for the ride in hot weather is not only important, but more comfortable as well.


Beyond the Basics:
What Else to Wear
Vented Helmet:
Make sure the helmet you purchase has plenty of vents-when you perspire inside a helmet, proper venting allows air in to cool your noggin and hot air trapped inside to escape. Avoid dark-colored helmets in hot weather and wear a tinted visor.

Jacket: Most apparel manufacturers offer a multitude of vented leather or textile jackets. We're not entirely sold on the new fabric mesh jackets on the market, but we agree that wearing one is better than riding in a T-shirt. If possible, buy a more versatile jacket with zippered vents. If you have the budget for a warm-weather-only jacket, we recommend a light-colored, vented leather model.

Gloves: While it's possible to find very lightweight, vented gloves on the market, we believe the trade-off in protection is not worth the minimal comfort advantage. Wear light-colored, standard riding gloves (light colors won't stain your hands and are cooler) with a long gauntlet and wrist strap.

Tips and Tricks:
Cover Up:
Believe it or not, during long trips in the heat it is better to cover up than be exposed. Control airflow so the skin remains moist but does not dry out. If skin becomes dry, you absorb heat from the air. Cover any exposed skin; sun and windburn only make you more uncomfortable.

Soak Everything: When traveling in hot weather, use evaporative cooling. Soak your T-shirt, helmet liner, head-everything. Use these methods and you'll find yourself shivering on a 100-degree day.


Pack ice in perforated plastic baggies and stick them inside your jacket pockets for some instant evaporative cooling.

Ice: Place ice in your jacket's interior pockets for effective evaporative cooling. For a somewhat slower cooling effect, use blue gel ice packs or ice in perforated plastic baggies. The more holes in the bags, the faster the ice water leaks out (and the faster it melts).

Wet Bandana: A wet bandana around the neck will do wonders for lowering your body temperature. Anything cold touching the carotid artery in the neck has a supercooling effect, as it directly chills the blood going to the brain. A bandana will dry out fairly quickly, however, so consider using one of the gel/crystal tube ties available at many outdoor sport shops.

Water Mister: Pressurized water misters are cheap and easy to carry. Throw one in your tank bag and use it at stops for quick, easy cooling on the face and neck.

Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen to any exposed skin. You wouldn't go to the beach for eight hours without sun protection-why try it on your ride?


Wearing shorts under an easily removed full riding suit makes for quick cool-downs at rest stops.


Wear Shorts: Under your gear, that is. Wear shorts underneath your full riding gear for a quick cool-down at stops. This is best used in conjunction with nonleather zip-off suits that can be quickly removed during short rests.

Stay hydrated: Long hauls in hot weather can easily lead to dehydration, which will in time inhibit your ability to properly ride a motorcycle. Carry a water bottle with you at all times, or wear a backpack drinking system for on-road resupply. These systems have been worn by racers and street riders alike with tremendous success. If you prefer not to wear a drinking system, fasten one to the front of your tankbag for easy access.


Got water? A drinking system is invaluable on those long, hot summer rides.

Remember: Drink, drink, drink (but not alcohol).
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the past two decades more people have died from extreme heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes and earthquakes combined. Heat exhaustion can set in very quickly and is the result of excessive heat and dehydration. Its symptoms range from dizziness, headaches and weakness to nausea and fainting. Sweat is your body's main method of dissipating heat; as you become dehydrated you won't sweat as much and your body will not be able to cool itself. To help reduce the risk of dehydration in hot conditions, make sure to drink at least 16 to 32 ounces of cool fluids per hour. Stay hydrated, stay healthy.

WET WEATHER
Traveling in the rain can be one of the most enjoyable experiences on two wheels. There's no better feeling than flicking along a country road during a summer thunderstorm as the water beads on your face shield...unless it slides off the chin bar and drips down your neck. In order to stay warm and comfortable you have to stay dry, all easily accomplished with a little thought and preparation.

What Else to Wear
Undergarments:
For traveling in cold, wet conditions, avoid wearing cotton undergarments. Cotton offers no insulation once wet and does not wick moisture away from the skin-it gets soggy and cold. Here again, opt for quality. Moisture-wicking long underwear can be found at a variety of active-wear retailers and is a much better alternative to cotton.

Jacket and Pants: Don't forget that all the basic protective gear is needed underneath a plastic or vinyl rainsuit, which will offer no protection in the event of a crash.

Rainsuit: While some off-the-shelf riding suits are waterproof, we like the versatility and weather protection offered by a purpose-built rainsuit. They are relatively inexpensive and there are a myriad of one and two-piece designs available starting from $29 all the way to $150. We have found that two-piece rainsuits offer the best compromise, as they're easier to get into than one-piece outfits and offer the option of wearing only the jacket for light rain showers.

Rubber booties: If you're on a budget, it's cheaper and just as effective to travel in your standard riding boots covered with rubber booties than to purchase a separate set of waterproof riding boots. Some motorcycle accessory manufacturers offer rubber boot-covers that are easier to put on than conventional booties. All can make life much more enjoyable and be had for under $20.

Gloves: There are many waterproof gloves on the market that fend off the elements. Most of the major apparel manufacturers carry a wet-weather glove in their lineup, so take a look at your local motorcycle dealer or browse through the Internet. When buying wet-weather gloves, avoid anything too bulky that restricts hand movement and dexterity.

Tips and Tricks:
Seal your helmet:
Most helmets aren't successful in keeping all water out during prolonged wet weather riding. Usually you'll feel a few drips in the front vent or see rain dribbling down the inside of the visor. We like using small strips of duct tape to seal any vents that don't aid in defogging the shield. If fogging is not a problem, we even seal the gap between the top of the shield and the helmet.

Seal your gear: Many textile riding suits are capable of fending off moisture for a short amount of time. This can be lengthened by using a sealant such as 3M's Scotchgard on the material, applied twice on the seams. Mink oil can be used for leather products, but beware, these techniques also reduce the material's ability to breathe come warmer weather.

Defog: A fogged-up helmet shield is one of the most annoying problems during wet-weather riding, and it can be dangerous as well. Try the Fog City Fog Shield, which is a plastic laminate that adheres to the inside of your shield and eliminates fogging, or go to any ski or sporting goods shop and ask for an antifog cloth. Both work remarkably well and cost less than $5.


Large rubber household cleaning gloves can be used over standard riding gloves. You won't win any fashion contests, but they will help keep the wind and water away.

Rubber Gloves: If you don't have a good set of waterproof riding gloves, large rubber household cleaning gloves or other industrial rubber mitts will fit over your standard gloves and are surprisingly effective at keeping out the rain. Thin surgical gloves can also be worn to help keep moisture off the skin.

Boot Spray: Use a small amount of Pam vegetable nonstick cooking spray on the inside of your rubber booties for lubrication, which makes sliding them on and off a much less aggravating affair. It wipes off easily once the bootie is removed.






Tucking your gloves inside the sleeve of your rainsuit helps keep water from running down the arm and into the glove gauntlet.

Glove Gauntlets: When riding a sportbike in the rain, try pulling the sleeve of your rainsuit over the top of your glove. This helps keep water from leaking through the gauntlet top and into the glove.


Goofy as they may look, garbage bags over your torso, feet and hands do a decent job of keeping you dry in an emergency.

Emergency Rain Gear: If you're stuck in an unexpected rainstorm, look no further than your local supermarket. Large plastic garbage bags (with slits cut out for your head and arms) can be used to repel water from your upper torso, and smaller bags can be wrapped around the feet and hands to help fend off the moisture. Fashion points do not apply.

Neoprene: Fairly inexpensive slip-on neoprene braces for your knees, ankles and wrists can easily be modified to help seal off openings in your riding gear. When slipped over seams in your gear (between the glove and sleeve, for instance), they help catch water before it reaches your skin.

Remember: Stop the Rain. Even in warmer climates, it's important to keep moisture away from your clothes and skin. Wet clothes offer no insulating properties, and draw heat from your body much quicker than dry clothes. This is especially so when riding in wet, cold conditions, where the risk of hypothermia is highest.

My New Lid !

This is my new possession fellas.

;)

Got it as a gift and the second best gift I have ever got. Don't inquire bout the first one cause you are not going to get any answer on it. Anyways, coming back to the lid, it comes from the South-east Asian market and its been bought from PlanetDSG, Pune. Its dented the buyers' pocket considerably, but it is worth every penny spent. Especially, considering the fact that I have been using it regularly and have been very comfortable with its fit, finish and weight. It weighs less than my earlier GPOne and reduces sound to a much greater extent. The inner padding is superb fitting, very comfy and the colour isn't hard to maintain and looks classy. Talking about looks, the Matt finish is simply stunning and this BHP lid is made for street-fighter owners as well as lovers.

It is available with smoke, tinted and clear visors, but if you do not use the visor at night (I don't), then the tinted one is the best bet I think. The visor has a press-fit mechanism and is easy to remove and fit back onto the lid. The helmet retails at 4Ks and it was one of the last pieces left with DSG. Try your luck though.

Who needs riding gear? huh? Not us, because . . .

Riding without boots and crashing might cost you some road rash or foot mash or even in an extreme case might lead to amputation. You might never walk without a limp. You might battle a weight and fitness problem for the rest of your life. You might never walk with pain. But it probably wouldn't kill you.

Riding without gloves and crashing might cost you some road rash or a munched hand or the severe, excrutiating pain of mangling a body part rich with nerve endings. Or you could lose a finger or two. It could cost you the ability to play ball with your son, or to hold a beer. But it probably wouldn't kill you.

Riding without at least an armored jacket and leather trousers or full leathers or an Aerostich or even just a leather jacket and jeans and crashing might cost you serious road rash. You might grind off a nipple. You might embed gravel in your elbow. You might get beef jerky all over your back. You might grind off your kneecap or have a scar resembling Australia on you calf like a friend of mine does. You would be scarred for life and not be able to walk on a beach shirtless without feeling self conscious. You might end up like Kevin Spacey's character in "Pay It Forward" and have to deal with the same awkward moment every time you remove your clothes with a new lover. But it probably won't kill you.

Riding without a back protector and crashing in all but rare crashes would be inconsequential. However, there are so many variables out there- curbs, fenders, poles, guardrails, debris in the road- any one of these could be the golden BB that nicks your spinal cord in just the wrong way and leaves you in a wheelchair for life. Or, maybe you just have constant sciatic pain in one leg. Or you can't move your legs. Or you have to wear diapers for when you shit yourself, and/or a colostomy bag you have to pull out of your pants leg and squeeze your waste out into the toilet at a bar like a guy I know. Or you can't move from the chest down. Or from the neck down. Are you good at working joysticks with your mouth? Or maybe you might need a respirator? Or 24 hour care? Certainly, there are impacts that are completely forseeable that would permanently injure you even with the best back protector in the world. But there are crashes and subsequent impacts that even mediocre back protectors can make that little bit of difference in- the ones you get up and walk away from, sore all over, but *walking*. Do you want the last time you walked to be when you walked out of 7-11 with a pack of smokes and then got on your bike? Those precious few steps out the door and over to the bike to be the five steps you remember the rest of your life because the next time you were off the bike you were lying strapped to a backboard staring at the headliner of an ambulance, tears running down your face because you couldn't feel the little piggies and you were almost ready to vomit at the stench of your shit because you lost control of your bowels? Riding without a back protector and crashing might not make a difference, or it might make all the difference in the world. It might not kill you, but it might make you wish it had.

And, finally, helmets. Riding without a helmet and crashing might be of no consequence. You might never even touch terra firma with your head. Or you might give yourself an asphalt facelift. You might get a concussion that results in only a bad headache the next day. You might get a serious concussion that lands you in the hospital for endless CAT scans and MRIs, and for the rest of your days be plagued by migraines. You might fracture your orbital and lose your vision. You might fracture your skull and end up fully functional but with a horrible Frankenstein like scar and a metal plate that bothers you on cold days and sets of metal detectors in airports. You might have a closed head injury from which you don't awaken from for hours or days or weeks or months- all the while your mother, father, sister, brother, children, workmates, and/or riding buddies come a visit you, filling an utterly depressing hospital room into a gauche jungle of flowers and bright card saying "get well soon!" that you never see or smell. Sure, you might awaken completely normal besides the hole drilled in your head to reduce pressure. Or you might awaken a little fuzzy, unsure who these people are. Or you might awaken and have to re-learn everything it took you all your life to learn, eventually returning to normal or even better like Harrison Ford in "Regarding Henry". Or you might awaken a man-child, drooling and laughing as you try to stack blocks, wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt signed by your mother, father, sister, brother, children, workmates, and/or riding buddies- which you will never read. Or you might have an open head injury, from which the "you" you know will most likely never return. The rest of your life -be it a day, a week, a month, a year- will consist of feeding tubes, the endless beep and whoosh of the heart monitor and respirator, and the drip-drip or IV fluids, catheters in your rod, and feeding tubes. Of course, you won't mind all of this, you'll be in a dream land no one knows about. Your body will waste away and a trophy. Eventually, the shell that used to be you would give out, and your loved ones would have to make the most grueling decision of their life. Or, you might die on the road, fluffy gray brain matter mixing with blood and cerebro-spinal fluid. Perhaps you last ride would be twenty miles an hour down the street by your house combined with an impatient young driver and an ignored stop sign. Or perhaps it would be a ride on the freeway and a pothole denting your rim and popping the front tire off the bead sending you into the guardrail. Or you might go out in a blaze of glory qith a 100 mph wheelie ending the wrong way. Whichever way, would make maybe a 10 second news story depending on where you live, maybe a paragraph buried on page 32B of the paper. Riding without a helmet could be of no matter- or it could mean the difference between going on as you are now, or having life taken awy from you as if God flipped a switch.


I can live without toes or a mangled foot- but I choose to try and prevent that. I can live with a hand that looks like a burn victim's and maybe relearn to write with my left hand- but I choose to try and prevent that. I can live with a scar in the shape of Australia on my calf- but I try and prevent that. I can live with road rash on my torso and arms- but I try to prevent that. I could live in a wheelchair, agonizing through every day, but I chose to try and prevent that.

I can't live as a man-child. I've already played with blocks. I only drool when I sleep.

We all make choices. Gear can't always save you. All the best leather, denim, Cordura, Kevlar, fiberglass, and plastic is useless when fate throws the Immovable Object or the Irresistible Force in your path. But I choose to stack the deck in my favor. If it all ends up for naught and the stacked deck and the cards up my sleeve end up losing to Fate's royal flush, so be it. But I'll try.

My First Riding Gear

Spidi Team Textile Jacket:Almost a year and a half has passed since I bought the Spidi Team textile jacket from Rash. Spidi is an Italian firm and their riding gear is used by Pro-MotoGP riders like Colin Edwards, Shinya Nakano, Gibernau and many more. Team jacket is made from Cordura material which has high strength qualities to protect the rider under major crashes. Though, leather provides the best protection, I bough this because of the understated speeds that we usually do on our Indian machinery, the Indian summers and of course, the cost of leather jackets was an issue for me too. And till date I haven't ever felt that buying this jacket was a mistake, as it has only added to my confidence and has made me Go Faster.

The Team comes equipped with an inner liner for protection against cold and during the rains. Without the inner liner it provides very little protection in case of rains. The elbows and shoulders have detachable CE certified protectors and it also has an arrangement to slip a back protector inside. The clip-stop technique helps in keeping the jacket in place at speeds in excess of 100km/h. The sleeves are removable and this helps a lot in our climate conditions. The two air-vents work fine and allow enough air to pass once I'm on the bike to keep me away from sweating.

*No crashes so far with this jacket on [touch-wood], so cannot talk about its performance under a crash.


Angels Racing "Dry-Ice" Gloves:
Pictures speak louder than text ! Bruised and battered, the Angels Racing gloves were given to us by our office for testing and regular use. And for that very reason I have shown no mercy towards them, unlike my jacket. Using them regularly even for my trips to work and back, I have exploited these gloves to the hilt. But then, these are one of the best fitting gloves that I have come across till date. The fit snuggly on the hands, provide accurate feedback from the bars and most importantly, they protect. Apart from the tacky finish and threads coming off them after rigorous usage, there isn't much for me to complain about them.

AXO Primato Riding Boots:
Latest and dearest addition in my gear- AXO Primato riding boots. Killer stuff! Made out of the same quality leather that the 250cc MotoGP champs use, complete with sliders, air-vents and ankle protection. Anything left to complain? Well yes. I'm not suppose to use them often. Damn ! I bought them as I needed a good pair of boots for our office photo-features as well as my own use. So I bought these boots from the riding gear store located on M.G. Road, Pune, called Dream Sporting Gear. They did cost a bomb, but then safety doesn't come cheap and nor does motorcycling. I cannot enjoy a motorcycle without my two skinny limbs, so I better not take any chances, I thought ! Questions like right or wrong don't cross my mind when it comes to Riding Gear. I love it and I use it for all the right reasons. From going flat-out in Amby Valley to impressing the dames on F.C. But the most enjoyable feature about these boots is the toe-slider. Leaned into the corner, the toe pops out and the slider scrapes the ground giving out sparks and that metal sound. What good fun it is !

SteelBird-GPOne Series Helmet:
My first proper lid that I bought after joining RSA- The Biker Club. After seeing the guys in the club wearing all these funky helmets, I couldn't resist the urge and immediately bought one from Funky's Store on M.G. Road. They had some great variety, but most of it was already present in the club. Also, I like it to be understated, so I bought a simple solid coloured GPOne in Dark Blue. Later, I added some small decals to it and of course, the number 46. After I bought my SPIDI jacket, Spidi decals too made their way up on the helmet. Dark visor was there until I learned it the hard way that it is not smart to have a dark visor on our Great Indian Roads. Poor visibility resulted in a major crash and immediately the dark visor was trashed for a clear one. Though it doesn't look all that great, it definitely serves better than the dark one. I think its more important to see right than look great!
